Seeking Forgiveness When Swearing An Oath

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would beg for forgiveness from Allah when he swore an oath.

Narrated AbuHurayrah: When the Messenger of Allah swore an oath, it was: No, and I beg forgiveness of Allah.
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْعَزِيزِ بْنِ أَبِي رِزْمَةَ، أَخْبَرَنِي زَيْدُ بْنُ حُبَابٍ، أَخْبَرَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ هِلاَلٍ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي أَنَّهُ، سَمِعَ أَبَا هُرَيْرَةَ، يَقُولُ ‏:‏ كَانَتْ يَمِينُ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ إِذَا حَلَفَ يَقُولُ ‏:‏ ‏ "‏ لاَ، وَأَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ

This hadith is about the importance of seeking forgiveness from Allah when swearing an oath. It was narrated by AbuHurayrah that the Messenger of Allah used to swear an oath and then immediately seek forgiveness from Allah. This teaches us that we should be mindful of our words and not take them lightly as they are a form of worship in Islam. We should always remember to ask for forgiveness after making any kind of promise or commitment as it shows humility and sincerity towards our Lord. Furthermore, this hadith also serves as a reminder to us that we should never make false promises or break our commitments as it is considered sinful in Islam.
