Sahih al-Bukhari 2455 (Book 46, Hadith 16) #2350
Eating Dates in Company

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) forbade eating two dates at a time without the permission of one's companions.

Narrated Jabala: "We were in Medina with some of the Iraqi people, and we were struck with famine and Ibn Az- Zubair used to give us dates. Ibn 'Umar used to pass by and say, "The Prophet forbade us to eat two dates at a time, unless one takes the permission of one's companions".

QUICK LESSONS:
Ask for permission before taking anything shared by others .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of companionship and seeking permission when eating dates. It was narrated by Jabala, who was in Medina with some Iraqi people during a famine. Ibn Az-Zubair used to give them dates, and Ibn 'Umar would pass by and remind them that the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ had forbidden them from eating two dates at a time without asking for permission from their companions first. This teaches us that it is important to be mindful of our manners when we are around others, even if it is something as small as sharing food. We should always ask for permission before taking something that belongs to someone else or that they are sharing with us, even if it is just two dates! Additionally, this hadith also emphasizes the importance of being in good company; having friends or family around us can make difficult times easier and more enjoyable.
