Grave Etiquette for Muslims

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that the niche in the side of a grave is for Muslims and the excavation in the middle is for non-Muslims.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Abbas: The Prophet said: The niche in the side of the grave is for us and the excavation in the middle is for others.
حَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِسْمَاعِيلَ، حَدَّثَنَا حَكَّامُ بْنُ سَلْمٍ، عَنْ عَلِيِّ بْنِ عَبْدِ الأَعْلَى، عَنْ أَبِيهِ، عَنْ سَعِيدِ بْنِ جُبَيْرٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ اللَّحْدُ لَنَا وَالشَّقُّ لِغَيْرِنَا

This hadith teaches us about proper etiquette when it comes to graves. The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that when burying someone, there should be a niche in the side of the grave for Muslims and an excavation in the middle of it for non-Muslims. This shows respect to all people regardless of their faith or beliefs, as everyone deserves to be buried with dignity. It also teaches us to be mindful and respectful when visiting graves, as we should not disturb those who have passed away by making too much noise or being disrespectful. Additionally, this hadith reminds us that we should treat all people with kindness and respect no matter what their beliefs are.
