Sunan Abi Dawud 3071 (Book 20, Hadith 144) #23361
Claiming Unused Water Sources

SUMMARY: The Prophet ﷺ taught that if a Muslim discovers a water source that has not been used before, it belongs to them.

Narrated Asmar ibn Mudarris: I came to the Prophet , and took the oath of allegiance to him. He said: If anyone reaches a water which has not been approached before by any Muslim, it belongs to him. The people, therefore, went out running and marking (on the land).

QUICK LESSONS:
Claim resources for yourself and your community when you find them . Take oaths seriously . Uphold your promises .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of claiming resources for ourselves and our community. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught that if a Muslim discovers an unused water source, they have the right to claim it as their own. This is important because water is essential for life and having access to clean and safe sources can be difficult in some areas. By claiming these resources, Muslims are able to provide for themselves and their communities in times of need. Additionally, this hadith also teaches us about loyalty and commitment; when taking an oath of allegiance with the Prophet ﷺ, Muslims are expected to uphold their promises even when it comes to something as simple as claiming an unused resource like water.
