Sunan Abi Dawud 3014 (Book 20, Hadith 87) #23304
Dividing Spoils of War from Khaybar

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) divided the spoils of war from Khaybar into thirty-six lots, with half of it set aside for future needs and the Muslims. He then employed Jews to work on it.

Narrated Bashir ibn Yasar: When Allah bestowed Khaybar on the Messenger of Allah as fay' (spoils of war without fighting), he divided the whole into thirty six lots. He put aside a half, ie eighteen lots, for the Muslims. Each lot comprised one hundred shares, and the Prophet was with them. He received a share like the share of one of them. The Messenger of Allah separated eighteen lots, that is, half, for his future needs and whatever befell the Muslims. These were al-Watih, al-Kutaybah, as-Salalim and their colleagues. When all this property came in the possession of the Prophet and of the Muslims, they did not have sufficient labourers to work on it. The Messenger of Allah called Jews and employed them on contract.

QUICK LESSONS:
Share generously what you have been blessed with; Set some aside for your future needs; Seek help from those who are willing to help you out

EXPLANATIONS:
When Allah bestowed Khaybar on the Prophet Muhammad as fay', he divided it into thirty six lots. Half of these lots were set aside for the Muslims while the other half was kept for future needs. Since there weren't enough labourers to work on this property, the Prophet called upon Jews and employed them on contract. This hadith teaches us that when we are blessed with something, we should be generous in sharing it with others and also be wise in setting some aside for our future needs. It also teaches us that even if we don't have enough resources or manpower to do something, we can always seek help from others who are willing to help us out.
