Reducing Debts

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) advised Ka'b to reduce the debt of 'Abdullah bin Abi Hadrad Al-Aslami to half.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Ka'b bin Malik Al-Ansari from Ka'b bin Malik: That 'Abdullah bin Abi Hadrad Al-Aslami owed him some debt. Ka'b met him and caught hold of him and they started talking and their voices grew loudest. The Prophet passed by them and addressed Ka'b, pointing out to him to reduce the debt to one half. So, Ka'b got one half of the debt and exempted the debtor from the other half.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of reducing debts. It was narrated by Abdullah bin Ka’b bin Malik Al-Ansari from Ka’b bin Malik that Abdullah ibn Abi Hadrad Al-Aslami owed him some debt. When they met, their voices grew loudest and the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed by them and addressed Ka’b, pointing out to him to reduce the debt to one half. So, in response, Ka’b got one half of the debt and exempted the debtor from paying back the other half. This hadith teaches us that it is important for us to be generous with our money and not burden people with too much debt as it can be difficult for them to pay back. We should also try our best not take advantage of people who are in need or owe us money by asking for more than what they can afford or what is fair.
