Hunting With Dogs

SUMMARY: It is permissible to hunt with a trained dog and eat the hunted animal, but if hunting with an untrained dog, one must slaughter the animal before eating it.

Narrated Abu Taa'labat b. al-Khushani: I said: Messenger of Allah, I hunt with my trained dog, and with my untrained dog? He said: 'What you hunt with your trained dog, mention Allah's names (on it) and eat; and what you hunt with your untrained dog, and you find in a position that you slaughter it, then eat.

QUICK LESSONS:
Mention Allah’s Name when consuming meat obtained from hunting with a trained dog . Slaughter the animal before consuming meat obtained from hunting with an untrained dog .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the permissibility of hunting with dogs. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said that when hunting with a trained dog, one should mention Allah's name and then eat what was hunted. However, if one hunts with an untrained dog and finds something in a position where it can be slaughtered, then they should slaughter it before eating it. This hadith teaches us that we should be mindful of how we obtain our food and to always remember Allah's name when doing so. We are also reminded to take care of animals by not causing them unnecessary pain or suffering.
