Hunting for Food

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) advised AbuTha'labah al-Khushani to eat whatever he hunts with his bow and trained dog, whether it has been slaughtered or not.

Narrated AbuTha'labah al-Khushani: The Messenger of Allah said to me: AbuTha'labah, eat what returns to you by your bow and your dog. Ibn Harb's version adds: "The trained (dog), and your hand, then eat, whether it has been slaughtered or not slaughtered".
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُصَفَّى، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُصَفَّى، حَدَّثَنَا بَقِيَّةُ، عَنِ الزُّبَيْدِيِّ، حَدَّثَنَا يُونُسُ بْنُ سَيْفٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو إِدْرِيسَ الْخَوْلاَنِيُّ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو ثَعْلَبَةَ الْخُشَنِيُّ، قَالَ قَالَ لِي رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏"‏ يَا أَبَا ثَعْلَبَةَ كُلْ مَا رَدَّتْ عَلَيْكَ قَوْسُكَ وَكَلْبُكَ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ زَادَ عَنِ ابْنِ حَرْبٍ ‏"‏ الْمُعَلَّمُ وَيَدُكَ فَكُلْ ذَكِيًّا وَغَيْرَ ذَكِيٍّ

In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad is advising AbuTha'labah al-Khushani to eat whatever he hunts with his bow and trained dog, whether it has been slaughtered or not. This hadith teaches us that hunting is a permissible way of obtaining food in Islam as long as the animal hunted is lawful to consume. It also teaches us that we should be thankful for what Allah provides us with and make use of all resources available to us in order to sustain ourselves. Furthermore, this hadith encourages Muslims to be mindful of their actions when hunting animals and ensure that they are killed humanely if they are going to be consumed.
