Sahih al-Bukhari 2416 (Book 44, Hadith 7) #2311
The Consequences of False Oaths

SUMMARY: Taking a false oath to take someone else's property is wrong and will lead to Allah's anger.

Narrated 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud: Allah's Messenger said, "Whoever takes a false oath so as to take the property of a Muslim (illegally) will meet Allah while He will be angry with him". Al-Ash'ath said: By Allah, that saying concerned me. I had common land with a Jew, and the Jew later on denied my ownership, so I took him to the Prophet who asked me whether I had a proof of my ownership. When I replied in the negative, the Prophet asked the Jew to take an oath. I said, "O Allah's Messenger ! He will take an oath and deprive me of my property". So, Allah revealed the following verse: "Verily! Those who purchase a little gain at the cost of Allah's covenant and their oaths". (3:77)

QUICK LESSONS:
Always tell the truth and do not lie or make false promises in order to gain something from another person without their permission or consent.
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the consequences of taking a false oath in order to take someone else’s property. It was narrated by 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud that Allah's Messenger said that whoever takes a false oath so as to take the property of a Muslim illegally will meet Allah while He will be angry with him. This means that if someone lies and takes an oath in order to gain something from another person without their permission or consent then they are doing something wrong and it is not acceptable in the eyes of Allah. Furthermore, this action will result in punishment from Allah as He will be angry with them for their dishonesty. Therefore, it is important for people to always tell the truth and not lie or make false promises in order to gain something from another person without their permission or consent.
