Cancellation of Manumission

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) cancelled the manumission of a slave and sold him to Nu'aim bin Al-Nahham.

Narrated Jabir: A man manumitted a slave and he had no other property than that, so the Prophet canceled the manumission (and sold the slave for him). Nu'aim bin Al-Nahham bought the slave from him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Think through your decisions before making them .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the cancellation of manumission, which is when a slave is set free by their master. In this case, the master had no other property than that so the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ cancelled the manumission and sold the slave to Nu'aim bin Al-Nahham. This shows us that it is important to be mindful of our actions and think through our decisions before we make them. It also teaches us that slavery was an accepted practice in those times, but it was not encouraged or supported by Islam as it goes against its teachings on justice and equality for all people regardless of their social status or background. We can also learn from this hadith that even though slavery was accepted at one point in time, it does not mean that we should accept it now as Islam has evolved over time with new interpretations and understandings being developed by scholars throughout history.
