Sunan Abi Dawud 2817 (Book 16, Hadith 30) #23107
Abrogation of Eating Rules

SUMMARY: The hadith explains that the verses of eating only food on which Allah's name has been pronounced and not eating food on which Allah's name has not been pronounced have been abrogated, and an exception was made by the verse allowing people to eat food from the People of the Book.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas: The verse: "So eat of (meats) on which Allah's name hath been pronounced" and the verse: "Eat not of (meats) on which Allah's name hath not been pronounced" were abrogated, meaning an exception was made therein by the verse: "The food of the people of the Book is lawful unto you and yours is lawful unto them".

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect other religions and their beliefs; practice religious tolerance; accept differences among various faiths; understand others’ perspectives without judgement or prejudice .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains that there were two verses in Quran regarding what kind of food is permissible to eat. One verse said that only food on which Allah's name has been pronounced is permissible, while another said that one should not eat any food on which Allah's name has not been pronounced. However, these two verses were abrogated by a third verse, making an exception for people to be able to eat from those who are considered as ‘People of the Book’. This means that Muslims can now also consume certain foods from other religions such as Christianity and Judaism if they wish to do so. This hadith teaches us about religious tolerance and understanding between different faiths.
