Sunan Abi Dawud 2625 (Book 15, Hadith 149) #22916
Obedience to Allah Alone

SUMMARY: Obedience is only due to Allah and should not be given in matters that involve disobedience to Him.

'Ali (Allaah be pleased with him) said "The Messenger of Allah sent an army and appointed a man as a commander for them and he commanded them to listen to him and obey. He kindled fire and ordered them to jump into it. A group refused to enter into it and said "We escaped from the fire; a group intended to enter into it. When the Prophet was informed about it, he said "Had they entered into it, they would have remained into it. There is no obedience in matters involving disobedience to Allaah. Obedience is in matters which are good and universally recognized.

QUICK LESSONS:
Obey Allah's commands at all times regardless of what others may tell you or command you do do otherwise .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith, narrated by Ali ibn Abi Talib, speaks of the importance of obedience to Allah alone. It tells us that we should not obey anyone if it involves disobeying God. The story in the hadith is about a commander who ordered his army to jump into a fire, but some refused because they had already escaped from it. When the Prophet was informed about this, he said that if they had obeyed their commander and jumped into the fire, they would have remained in it as it was an act of disobedience towards God. This teaches us that obedience is only due to Allah and should not be given in matters which involve disobeying Him. We must always remember that our ultimate loyalty lies with God alone and no one else can take precedence over Him when it comes to obeying His commands.

The values taught by this Hadith are loyalty towards God, obedience towards His commands and refraining from acts of disobedience even if commanded by someone else.
