The Practice of Itikaf

SUMMARY: Aishah (may Allaah be pleased with her) reported that one of the wives of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) observed Itikaf in the mosque and would sometimes experience yellowness and redness while praying.

A’ishah(may Allaah be pleased with her) said "One of the wives of the Apostle of Allaah observed I’tikaf along with him (in the mosque). She would see yellowness and redness. Sometimes we would place a washbasin while she prayed".
حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عِيسَى، وَقُتَيْبَةُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ، عَنْ خَالِدٍ، عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ، - رضى الله عنها - قَالَتِ اعْتَكَفَتْ مَعَ النَّبِيِّ امْرَأَةٌ مِنْ أَزْوَاجِهِ فَكَانَتْ تَرَى الصُّفْرَةَ وَالْحُمْرَةَ فَرُبَّمَا وَضَعْنَا الطَّسْتَ تَحْتَهَا وَهِيَ تُصَلِّي

This hadith is about a practice called Itikaf which is when a person spends time in a mosque for spiritual retreat. One of the wives of Prophet Muhammad practiced this and she would sometimes experience yellowness and redness while praying. This hadith teaches us that it is important to take time out for spiritual retreats as it can help us to become closer to God. We can also learn from this hadith that prayer should not only be done out of obligation but also with sincerity and devotion so we can reap its full benefits.
