The Virtue of I'tikaf

SUMMARY: Umar took a vow to spend a night or day in devotion near the Ka'bah and asked the Prophet about it, who advised him to observe i'tikaf and fast.

Narrated Abdullah ibn Umar: Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took a vow in the pre-Islamic days to spend a night or a day in devotion near the Ka'bah (in the sacred mosque). He asked the Prophet about it. He said: Observe i'tikaf (ie spend a night or a day near the Ka'bah) and fast.

The Prophet advised him to observe i’tikaf and fast. This hadith teaches us that we should be devoted to Allah by spending time in prayer and contemplation at His House, as well as fasting during this period of spiritual retreat. It also shows us that we should seek guidance from our religious leaders when we are unsure about how best to fulfill our vows or obligations towards Allah.
