Sunan Abi Dawud 2467 (Book 14, Hadith 155) #22758
The Prophet's Practice of I'tikaf

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would observe I'tikaf and spend time with his wife Aishah, only leaving the house to fulfill human needs.

'Aishah said: When the Messenger of Allah observed I'tikaf, he would put his head near me, and I would comb it. and he entered the house only to fulfill human needs (ie to urinate or to relieve himself).

QUICK LESSONS:
Dedicate your time for worshiping God; Take care of your physical health while worshipping God; Spend quality time with family members; Balance between spiritual and physical wellbeing .

EXPLANATIONS:
During the month of Ramadan, Muslims practice a spiritual retreat known as ‘I’tikÄf. This is when they dedicate their time to worship Allah and stay in a mosque for a certain period of time. It was narrated that when the Messenger of Allah practiced ‘I’tikÄf, he would spend his time with his wife ‘Äisha and she would comb his hair. He only left the house to fulfill basic human needs such as going to the bathroom or relieving himself. This hadith teaches us that even during times of spiritual retreat, it is important for us to take care of our physical needs as well so we can be healthy enough to continue worshipping Allah properly.
