Accepting Invitations with Gratitude

SUMMARY: When invited to a meal, one should accept the invitation and either eat if not fasting or pray if fasting.

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah as saying: When one of you receives an invitation (for a meal), he should accept it. If he isn to fasting, he should eat, and if he is fasten, he should pray. Hisham said: The word salat means to pray (for him to Allah). Abu Dawud said: This tradition has also been narrated by Hafs b. Ghiyath from Hisham.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو خَالِدٍ، عَنْ هِشَامٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ سِيرِينَ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ‏ "‏ إِذَا دُعِيَ أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيُجِبْ فَإِنْ كَانَ مُفْطِرًا فَلْيَطْعَمْ وَإِنْ كَانَ صَائِمًا فَلْيُصَلِّ ‏"‏ ‏.‏ قَالَ هِشَامٌ وَالصَّلاَةُ الدُّعَاءُ ‏.‏ قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ رَوَاهُ حَفْصُ بْنُ غِيَاثٍ أَيْضًا عَنْ هِشَامٍ

This hadith encourages us to accept invitations with gratitude, regardless of whether we are fasting or not. If we are fasting, then we should still accept the invitation and instead of eating, offer prayers for the host as a sign of appreciation for their hospitality. This hadith teaches us to be grateful for any kind of kindness that is shown towards us and also reminds us that prayer is an important part of our faith even when we are not able to partake in physical activities such as eating during Ramadan or other times when one may be fasting.
