The Benefits of Voluntary Fasting

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and Umm Hani discussing fasting and how it does not harm if it was voluntary.

Narrated Umm Hani: On the days of the conquest of Mecca, when Mecca was captured, Fatimah came and sat on the left side of the Messenger of Allah , and Umm Hani was on his right side. A slave-girl brought a vessel which contained some drink; she gave it to him and he drank of it. He then gave it to Umm Hani who drank of it. She said: Messenger of Allah, I have broken my fast; I was fasting. He said to her: Were you making atonement for something? She replied: #He said: Then it does not harm you if it was voluntary (fast).

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) is discussing with Umm Hani about fasting. A slave-girl brought a vessel which contained some drink; she gave it to him and he drank of it. He then gave it to Umm Hani who drank of it. She said that she was fasting, but the Prophet told her that if her fast was voluntary, then there would be no harm in breaking her fast. This hadith teaches us that voluntary fasting has many benefits and can be done without any consequences or harm coming from Allah SWT. It also teaches us to be mindful when we are fasting so as not to break our fast unintentionally or unknowingly, as this could lead to negative consequences for us in the afterlife. Additionally, this hadith shows us how kind and understanding the Prophet Muhammad was towards his companions even when they made mistakes or did something wrong unintentionally.
