Fasting and Breaking Fast with Pudding

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) would often ask if there was food available when he visited Aishah, and if not, he would say that he was fasting. On one occasion, when some pudding had been presented to them, the Prophet broke his fast.

'Aishah said: When the Prophet entered upon me, he would ask: Do you have food ? When we said: No, he would say: I am fasting. Waki' added in his version: Another day when he entered upon us, we said: Messenger of Allah, some pudding (hair) has been presented to us and we have retained it for you. He said: Bring it to me. Talhah said: He fasted in the morning, but broke his fast (that day).

QUICK LESSONS:
Share your food with others whenever possible .

EXPLANATIONS:
The hadith of 'Aishah tells us about the practice of fasting in Islam. When the Prophet Muhammad visited her home, he would ask if there was any food available; if not, then he would say that he was fasting. This shows us how important it is to observe sawm during Ramadan or any other time of year. On one occasion when some pudding had been presented to them, the Prophet broke his fast for that day. This teaches us that we should be generous with our food and share it with others whenever possible. It also reminds us that Allah is merciful and forgiving; even though we may have made a mistake or broken our fast unintentionally, He will forgive us as long as we repent sincerely for our actions.
