Prohibiting the Use of Hima Except for Allah and His Apostle

SUMMARY: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) prohibited the use of Hima for anyone other than Allah and His Apostle. He also made certain places as Hima for grazing the animals of Zakat.

Narrated As-Sab bin Jath-thama: Allah's Messenger said, No Hima except for Allah and His Apostle. We have been told that Allah's Apostle made a place called An-Naqi' as Hima, and 'Umar made Ash-Sharaf and Ar-Rabadha Hima (for grazing the animals of Zakat).
حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ بُكَيْرٍ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ يُونُسَ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ، عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ـ رضى الله عنهما ـ أَنَّ الصَّعْبَ بْنَ جَثَّامَةَ، قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ قَالَ ‏ "‏ لاَ حِمَى إِلاَّ لِلَّهِ وَلِرَسُولِهِ ‏"‏‏.‏ وَقَالَ بَلَغَنَا أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ حَمَى النَّقِيعَ، وَأَنَّ عُمَرَ حَمَى السَّرَفَ وَالرَّبَذَةَ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about prohibiting the use of a term called ‘Hima’ except for Allah and His Prophet. The term ‘Himma’ refers to an area or land which is set aside by a ruler or leader to be used only by them or their people. In this hadith, it was mentioned that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ prohibited anyone from using this term except himself and his followers. He also designated certain areas such as An Naqi', Ash Sharaf, and Ar Rabadha as Himma so that they could be used to graze animals given in charity or Zakat. This hadith teaches us not to take advantage of our power over others but instead use it responsibly in order to benefit everyone equally. It also teaches us about charity, generosity, justice, fairness, humility, respectfulness towards others etc., which are all important values we should strive towards in our lives today.
