Sunan Abi Dawud 2365 (Book 14, Hadith 53) #22656
Fasting While Travelling

SUMMARY: The Prophet (PBUH) commanded people to not fast while travelling, but he himself fasted. He also poured water over his head while fasting due to thirst or heat.

Narrated A Companion of the Prophet: AbuBakr ibn AbdurRahman reported on the authority of a Companion of the Prophet : I saw the Prophet commanding the people while he was travelling on the occasion of the conquest of Mecca not to observe fast. He said: Be strong for your enemy. The Messenger of Allah fasted himself. Narrated AbuBakr: A man who narrated his tradition to me said: I have seen the Messenger of Allah in al-Arj pouring water over his head while he was fasting, either because of thirst or because of heat.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow religious obligations with dedication ; Strive for excellence in faith and practice ; Take into consideration one's own limitations .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about fasting while travelling. The Prophet Muhammad PBUH commanded people not to observe fast when they are travelling, as it can be difficult for them due to the physical strain of travel and the lack of resources available on the journey. However, he himself observed fast during his travels, even pouring water over his head due to thirst or heat. This shows us that although we should take into consideration our own limitations and needs when it comes to religious obligations such as fasting, we should still strive for excellence in our faith and practice even in difficult circumstances.
