Sunan Abi Dawud 2329 (Book 14, Hadith 17) #22620
Fasting in Advance According to the Prophet (PBUH)

SUMMARY: The hadith is about Mu'awiyah's announcement to the people that they should fast in advance, and his response to Malik ibn Hubayrah as-Saba'i's question about whether he heard it from the Prophet (PBUH).

Narrated Mu'awiyah: AbulAzhar al-Mughirah ibn Farwah said: Mu'awiyah stood among the people at Dayr Mustahill lying at the gate of Hims. He said: O people, we sighted the moon on such-and-such day. We shall fast in advance. Anyone who likes to do so may do it. Malik ibn Hubayrah as-Saba'i stood up and asked: Mu'awiyah, did you hear the Messenger of Allah say something (about this matter), or is this something on the basis of your opinion? He replied: I heard the Messenger of Allah as saying: Fast the month (in the beginning) and in the last.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is narrated by Mu’awiyah and Malik ibn Hubayrah as-Saba’i. It talks about fasting in advance, which means that one can start fasting before Ramadan begins. This was something that was recommended by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He said “Fast the month [in the beginning] and in the last”. This means that one should fast at both ends of Ramadan, before it starts and after it ends. By doing this, one can prepare for Ramadan spiritually so they can make full use of its blessings during its duration. It also teaches us to be prepared for any situation or event beforehand so we are not caught off guard when it arrives. Furthermore, this hadith also teaches us how important it is to ask questions if we are unsure of something or need clarification on a matter; this is exemplified by Malik ibn Hubayrah as-Saba’i asking Mu’awiyah if he heard what he said from the Messenger of Allah himself or if it was based on his opinion alone.
