Sunan Abi Dawud 1870 (Book 11, Hadith 150) #22162
Raising Hands for Prayer While Looking at Ka'bah

SUMMARY: The hadith is about a man who raises his hands for prayer while looking at the Ka'bah, and Jabir ibn Abdullah states that he did not find anyone doing this except the Jews. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) did not do this when they performed hajj together.

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah: was asked about a man who looks at the House (the Ka'bah) and raises his hands (for prayer). He replied: I did not find anyone doing this except the Jews. We performed hajj along with the Messenger of Allah , but he did not do so.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings and practices approved by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who raised his hands in prayer while looking at the House of Allah, also known as the Ka’bah. Jabir ibn Abdullah reported that he did not find anyone doing this except for Jews. When they performed hajj with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, he did not do so either. This suggests that raising one's hands in prayer while looking at the House of Allah is an act of worship which was practiced by Jews but was not adopted by Muslims or their Prophet ﷺ. It teaches us to be mindful of our actions and to only practice those acts which are prescribed in Islam and have been approved by our beloved Prophet ﷺ.
