Sunan Abi Dawud 1818 (Book 11, Hadith 98) #22110
The Sacred State of Hajj

SUMMARY: This hadith is about Abu Bakr scolding his slave for losing a camel while the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was smiling and questioning what he was doing.

Narrated Asma' bint AbuBakr: We came out for performing hajj along with the Messenger of Allah . When we reached al-Araj, the Messenger of Allah alighted and we also alighted. Aisha sat beside the Messenger of Allah and I sat beside my father (AbuBakr). The equipment and personal effects of AbuBakr and of the Messenger of Allah were placed with AbuBakr's slave on a camel. AbuBakr was sitting and waiting for his arrival. He arrived but he had no camel with him. He asked: Where is your camel? He replied: I lost it last night. AbuBakr said: There was only one camel, even that you have lost. He then began to beat him while the Messenger of Allah was smiling and saying: Look at this man who is in the sacred state (putting on ihram), what is he doing? Ibn AbuRizmah said: The Messenger of Allah spoke nothing except the words: Look at this man who is in the sacred state (wearing ihram), what is he doing? He was smiling (when he uttered these words).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be mindful during religious rituals; fulfill your obligations; take responsibility for your actions; respect other people's property; show mercy to those under you; remember Allah always.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of being in a sacred state during hajj. It tells us that even when we are in a sacred state such as ihram during hajj, we should not forget our responsibilities and duties towards others. In this case, Abu Bakr scolded his slave for losing a camel which he was responsible for taking care of. The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) watched this scene with amusement and reminded everyone present that they were in the sacred state of hajj by saying "Look at this man who is in the sacred state (wearing ihram), what is he doing?". This hadith teaches us to be mindful of our actions even when we are performing religious rituals like hajj or umrah and to remember our obligations towards others. We should also be aware that Allah will judge us based on how well we fulfill these obligations regardless of whether or not we are performing religious rituals at the time.
