Sunan Abi Dawud 1600 (Book 9, Hadith 45) #21892
Protection of Salabah Wood

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad gave a man from the Banu Mat'an tribe permission to use a wood known as Salabah as a protected land, and Umar ibn al-Khattab later confirmed this permission if the man paid tithe on honey.

'Amr bin Shu'aib, on his father's authority, said that his grandfather reported: Hilal, a man from the tribe of Banu Mat'an brought a tenth of honey which he possessed in beehives to the Messenger of Allah . He asked him (the apostle of Allah) to give the wood known as Salabah as a protected (or restricted) land. The Messenger of Allah gave him that wood as a protected land. When Umar ibn al-Khattab succeeded, Sufyan ibn Wahb wrote to Umar asking him about this wood. Umar ibn al-Khattab wrote to him: If he (Hilal) pays you the tithe on honey what he used to pay to the Messenger of Allah , leave the protected land of Salabah in his possession; otherwise those bees are like those of any wood; anyone can take the honey as he likes.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith tells us about an incident involving the Prophet Muhammad and a man from the Banu Mat'an tribe. The man brought some honey he had collected in beehives to the Prophet Muhammad and asked for permission to use a wood known as Salabah as a protected land. The Prophet Muhammad granted him this request, and when Umar ibn al-Khattab succeeded him, Sufyan ibn Wahb wrote to Umar asking about this wood. Umar replied that if the man paid tithe on honey what he used to pay to the Messenger of Allah then he could keep using it; otherwise anyone could take honey from it like any other wood. This hadith teaches us that we should be generous with our possessions and help those in need whenever possible. It also shows us how important it is for people in positions of power or authority to remain just and fair when making decisions or rulings regarding others’ rights or possessions.
