Sunan Abi Dawud 1463 (Book 8, Hadith 48) #21755
Seeking Refuge in Allah with Powerful Phrases

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught Uqbah ibn Amir two phrases to use when seeking refuge in Allah, and these phrases are the most powerful for this purpose.

Narrated Uqbah ibn Amir: White I was travelling with the Messenger of Allah between al-Juhfah and al-Abwa', a wind and intense darkness enveloped us, whereupon the Messenger of Allah began to seek refuge in Allah, reciting: "I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn," and "I seek refuge in the Lord of men". He then said: Uqbah, use them when seeking refuge in Allah, for no one can use anything to compare with them for the purpose. Uqbah added: I heard him reciting them when he led the people in prayer.

Seek protection from God , Turn towards God during times of difficulty or distress .

EXPLANATIONS:
The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) was travelling with Uqbah ibn Amir between al-Juhfah and al-Abwa', when a strong wind and darkness enveloped them. In response, the Prophet Muhammad recited two phrases to seek refuge in Allah; “I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn” and “I seek refuge in the Lord of men”. He then instructed Uqbah to use these same phrases when seeking refuge from Allah as they are more powerful than anything else one can say for this purpose. This hadith teaches us that we should always turn to Allah for protection, guidance, and help during times of difficulty or distress. We should also remember that there is no one more powerful than Him who can protect us from harm or danger.
