Sunan Abi Dawud 1410 (Book 7, Hadith 10) #21702
Prostration of a Prophet

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) recited a surah and when he reached the place of prostration, he descended and prostrated himself and the people followed suit.

Narrated Sa'id al-Khudri: The Messenger of Allah recited surah Sad on the pulpit. When he reached the place of prostration (in the surah), he descended and prostrated himself and the people prostrated with him. When the next day came, he recited it. When he reached the place of prostration (in the surah), the people became ready for prostration. Thereupon the Messenger of Allah said: This is the repentance of a Prophet ; but I saw you being ready for prostration. So he descended and prostrated himself and the people prostrated along with him.

QUICK LESSONS:
Take your time before repenting so that you can make sure your repentance is sincere .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of repentance in Islam. It was narrated by Sa'id al-Khudri that the Messenger of Allah recited a surah from the Quran on the pulpit. When he reached to part where it said to prostrate oneself in prayer, he descended from his pulpit and prostrated himself along with all those present. The next day when he again recited this same surah on his pulpit and came to that part which said to prostrate oneself in prayer, all those present were ready for prostration but instead of allowing them to do so immediately as they were ready for it; He said “This is the repentance of a prophet” meaning that even though one may be ready for repentance at any given time but still one should take their time before actually repenting as it requires deep thought and contemplation. This hadith teaches us about how important repentance is in Islam as well as how we should take our time before actually repenting so that we can make sure our repentance is sincere.
