Sahih al-Bukhari 2258 (Book 36, Hadith 2) #2165
Rights of Neighbors

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) taught that neighbors have more rights than anyone else due to their nearness, and this was demonstrated in a transaction between Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas and Abu Rafi'.

Narrated 'Amr bin Ash-Sharid: While I was standing with Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas, Al-Miswar bin Makhrama came and put his hand on my shoulder. Meanwhile Abu Rafi', the freed slave of the Prophet came and asked Sa'd to buy from him the (two) dwellings which were in his house. Sa'd said, "By Allah I will not buy them". Al- Miswar said, "By Allah, you shall buy them". Sa'd replied, "By Allah, I will not pay more than four thousand (Dirhams) by installments". Abu Rafi' said, "I have been offered five hundred Dinars (for it) and had I not heard the Prophet saying, 'The neighbor has more right than anyone else because of his nearness, I would not give them to you for four-thousand (Dirhams) while I am offered five-hundred Dinars (one Dinar equals ten Dirhams) for them". So, he sold it to Sa'd.

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect your neighbors' rights; prioritize their needs over yours; be considerate towards them; be generous with them if possible; help them out if needed; show kindness towards them etc..

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of respecting the rights of one's neighbors. It is narrated by 'Amr bin Ash-Sharid who was standing with Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas when Al-Miswar bin Makhrama came and put his hand on his shoulder. At that time Abu Rafi', the freed slave of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ asked Sa'd to buy two dwellings which were in his house. Initially Sa'd refused but Al-Miswar insisted he should buy them. Eventually they agreed on a price and Abu Rafi' sold it to Sa'd for four thousand Dirhams. What makes this hadith special is that Abu Rafi' mentioned he had been offered five hundred Dinars for it but he decided not to take it because he remembered what the Prophet ﷺ said about respecting one's neighbor due to their nearness. This teaches us that we should always prioritize our neighbor's rights over our own interests or desires as much as possible.
