Replacing Pre-Islamic Games with Islamic Celebrations

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) replaced two days of pre-Islamic games with the day of sacrifice and the day of breaking fast.

Narrated Anas ibn Malik: When the Messenger of Allah came to Medina, the people had two days on which they engaged in games. He asked: What are these two days (what is the significance)? They said: We used to engage ourselves on them in the pre-Islamic period. The Messenger of Allah said: Allah has substituted for them something better than them, the day of sacrifice and the day of the breaking of the fast.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be grateful for all that Allah has given us and strive for righteousness in our lives.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) replaced two days of pre-Islamic games with two important Islamic celebrations. The first celebration is the Day of Sacrifice which is celebrated on Eid al Adha and commemorates Ibrahim's willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail for Allah. The second celebration is the Day of Breaking Fast which marks the end of Ramadan and celebrates Allah's mercy in granting us a month to repent our sins. These celebrations are much more meaningful than any game that was played during pre-Islamic times as they remind us to be grateful for all that Allah has given us and to strive for righteousness in our lives.
