Sunan Abi Dawud 413 (Book 2, Hadith 23) #20704
The Importance of Praying on Time

SUMMARY: This hadith is about the importance of praying on time and with full concentration, as opposed to the way hypocrites pray.

'Ala b. 'Abd al-Rahman said: We came upon Anas b. Malik after the Zuhr prayer. He stood for saying the 'Asr prayer. When he became free from praying, we mentioned to him about observing prayer in its early period or he himself mentioned it. He said: I heard the Messenger of Allah say: This is how hypocrites pray, this is how hypocrites pray, this is how hypocrites pray: He sits (watching the sun), and when it becomes yellow and is between the horns of the devil, or is on the horns of the devil, he rises and prays for rak'ahs quickly, remembering Allah only seldom during them.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith emphasizes the importance of praying on time and with full concentration, as opposed to how hypocrites pray. It was narrated by 'Ala b. 'Abd al-Rahman and Anas b. Malik that they came upon Anas after the Zuhr prayer, who was standing for saying the Asr prayer when they mentioned observing prayer in its early period or he himself mentioned it. He said that he heard Prophet Muhammad say that hypocrites pray quickly when the sun is between or on the horns of devil, remembering Allah only seldom during them. This hadith teaches us that we should not be like hypocrites but instead take our time while praying so we can focus fully on worshipping Allah and remember Him often during our prayers for it to be accepted by Him.
