Sunan Abi Dawud 412 (Book 2, Hadith 22) #20703
Observing Prayers Before Sunset and Dawn

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that if someone performs a rak'ah of the 'Asr prayer before sunset or a rak'ah of the Fajr prayer, they have observed the respective prayers.

Abu Hurairah reported the Messenger of Allah as saying: If anyone says a rak'ah of the 'Asr prayer before sunset, he has observed (the 'Asr prayer), and if anyone performs a rak'ah of the Fajr prayer, he has observed (the Fajr prayer).

TOPICS
prayer  *  rakah

QUICK LESSONS:
Perform one Rak'a of 'Asar or Fajer before sunset/dawn respectively.
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about observing prayers at specific times. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught us that if we perform one rak’ah of either the ‘Asr or Fajr prayer before sunset or dawn respectively, then we have observed those prayers. This means that even if we are unable to complete all four raka’ahs for either prayer due to time constraints, performing one will still count as having completed it. It is important to remember this so that we can make sure our daily prayers are done on time and in full.
