Sahih al-Bukhari 2150 (Book 34, Hadith 102) #2065
Deception in Trade

SUMMARY: Do not practice deception or fraud when buying and selling goods.

Narrated Abu Huraira: Allah's Messenger said, "Do not go forward to meet the caravan (to buy from it on the way before it reaches the town). And do not urge buyers to cancel their purchases to sell them (your own goods) yourselves, and do not practice Najsh. A town dweller should not sell the goods for the desert dweller. Do not leave sheep unmilked for a long time, when they are on sale, and whoever buys such an animal has the option of returning it, after milking it, along with a Sa of dates or keeping it. it has been kept unmilked for a long period by the seller (to deceive others).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest & fair while trading; Do not take advantage; Do not deceive potential buyers; Return animal with Sa'a if bought without milking

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the importance of being honest and fair when trading goods. Allah's Messenger, Muhammad ﷺ, warned against going forward to meet a caravan to buy from it before it reaches the town, urging buyers to cancel their purchases so that you can sell your own goods instead, and practicing Najsh which is a form of fraud. He also warned against a town dweller selling goods for desert dwellers as this could be seen as taking advantage of them. Lastly, he warned against leaving sheep unmilked for long periods of time when they are on sale as this could be seen as deceiving potential buyers. If someone does buy such an animal they have the option of returning it after milking it along with a Sa'a of dates or keeping it.

The main values taught in this hadith are honesty and fairness in trade practices and avoiding any form of deception or fraud when buying or selling goods. It also teaches us to be mindful that we should not take advantage of people who may not know better than us due to their lack of knowledge about certain matters such as trading practices in towns versus deserts etc..
