Sahih al-Bukhari 2134 (Book 34, Hadith 86) #2049
The Prohibition of Usury in Bartering

SUMMARY: This hadith explains that exchanging gold, wheat grain, dates and barley for the same items is usury (Riba) unless it is done hand to hand and in equal amounts.

Narrated Az-Zuhri from Malik bin Aus: That the latter said, "Who has change?" Talha said, "I (will have change) when our storekeeper comes from the forest". Malik bin Aus narrated from 'Umar bin Al-Khattab: Allah's Messenger said, "The bartering of gold for gold is Riba (usury), except if it is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and wheat grain for wheat grain is usury except if it is form hand to hand and equal in amount, and dates for dates is usury except if it is from hand to hand and equal in amount, and barley for barley is usury except if it is from hand to hand and equal in amount".

QUICK LESSONS:
Exchange goods directly between two people without a middleman or third party involved; Ensure both parties receive an equal amount of what they are exchanging; Be honest and fair when engaging in barter exchanges; Take financial responsibility when engaging in barter exchanges.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith explains the prohibition of usury when bartering goods. It states that exchanging gold for gold, wheat grain for wheat grain, dates for dates or barley for barley is considered usurious unless it is done by two people directly with an equal amount exchanged. This means that if someone wants to exchange one item with another item they must do so directly between two people without any middleman or third party involved and both parties must receive an equal amount of what they are exchanging. If this condition isn't met then the exchange would be considered usurious which Allah has forbidden in Islam as it causes harm to others financially. Therefore Muslims should be careful when engaging in barter exchanges and ensure that all conditions are met before doing so.
