Sunan Abi Dawud 20 (Book 1, Hadith 20) #20311
Punishment for Minor Sins

SUMMARY: The Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam ) passed by two graves and said that the people in them were being punished for minor sins, one of which was not covering oneself while urinating. He then planted a twig on each grave to hopefully lessen their punishment.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas : The Prophet (sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam ) passed by two graves. He said : Both (the dead) are being punished, but they are not being punished for a major (sin). One did not safeguard himself from urine. The other carried tales. He then called for a fresh twig and split it into two parts and planted one part on each grave and said: Perhaps their punishment may be mitigated as long as the twigs remain fresh. Another version of Hannad has: "One of them did not cover himself while urinating". This version does not have the words: "He did not safeguard himself from urine".

QUICK LESSONS:
Avoid all types of sinning no matter how small they may seem; Respect others; Show mercy towards others; Follow Allah's commands; Plant twigs on graves as an act of mercy towards those who have passed away .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the punishment for minor sins. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ passed by two graves and said that the people in them were being punished for minor sins, one of which was not covering oneself while urinating and the other was carrying tales. He then planted a twig on each grave to hopefully lessen their punishment. This hadith teaches us that even small sins can be punishable if we do not take care to avoid them, but also shows us Allah's mercy as he gave an opportunity to lessen this punishment through planting a twig on each grave. We should strive to stay away from all types of sin, no matter how small they may seem, as Allah knows best what is good or bad for us and will punish accordingly if we do not heed his warnings.
