The Prohibition of Drinking Dregs of Khamr or Tila

SUMMARY: Drinking the dregs of Khamr or Tila is Makruh.

It was narrated that Abu Al-Miskin said: "I asked Ibrahim: 'We take the dregs of Khamr or Tila (thickened grape juice) and clean them, then we soak it with raisins for three days, then we strain it and leave it until it matures, then we drink it'. He said: 'That is Makruh'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Abstain from Alcoholic Beverages

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith discusses the prohibition of drinking the dregs of an alcoholic beverage called khamr and a thickened grape juice called tila. Abu Al-Miskin asked Ibrahim about whether it was permissible to take these dregs, clean them, soak them with raisins for three days, strain them and leave them until they mature before drinking it. Ibrahim replied that this was makruh which means discouraged or disliked in Islam. This hadith teaches us that we should not drink any type of alcoholic beverage as it is prohibited in Islam and can lead to many negative consequences such as addiction and health problems. We should also be mindful when consuming other types of drinks such as thickened grape juice because even though they may not contain alcohol, they can still be considered makruh if consumed in large amounts or too often.
