Sahih al-Bukhari 2081 (Book 34, Hadith 34) #1997
Generosity and Hospitality

SUMMARY: A man saw signs of hunger on the Prophet's face and invited him to a meal with four other people. The Prophet accepted the invitation and allowed an additional person to join them.

Narrated Abu Mas'ud: An Ansari man, called Abu Shu'aib, came and told his butcher slave, "Prepare meals sufficient for five persons, for I want to invite the Prophet along with four other persons as I saw signs of hunger on his face". Abu Shu'aib invited them and another person came along with them. The Prophet said (to Abu Shu'aib), This man followed us, so if you allow him, he will join us, and if you want him to return, he will go back". Abu Shu'aib said, "No, I have allowed him (ie he, too, is welcomed to the meal).

QUICK LESSONS:
Be generous towards others even if it means sacrificing your own comfort or resources in order to do so; Welcome guests warmly into your home regardless of their social status or background; Share your resources with those who are less fortunate than you; Offer meals to those who are hungry
EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith highlights the importance of generosity and hospitality in Islam. It is narrated that Abu Shu'aib saw signs of hunger on the face of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and invited him along with four other people for a meal. The Prophet accepted his invitation despite being aware that there was not enough food for everyone. Furthermore, when another person joined them unexpectedly, he allowed him to stay without hesitation or complaint. This teaches us that we should always be generous towards others even if it means sacrificing our own comfort or resources in order to do so. We should also be hospitable towards guests by welcoming them warmly into our homes regardless of their social status or background.
