Prohibiting Usury Through Bartering

SUMMARY: It is not permissible to barter two Sa of dates for one Sa or two Dirhams for one Dirham as it is a form of usury.

Narrated Abu Sa'id: We used to be given mixed dates (from the booty) and used to sell (barter) two Sa of those dates) for one Sa (of good dates). The Prophet said (to us), "No (bartering of) two Sa for one Sa nor two Dirhams for one Dirham is permissible", (as that is a kind of usury). .

QUICK LESSONS:
Be honest and fair when dealing with money matters.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith speaks about the prohibition of usury through bartering. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was teaching his companions that it was not permissible to exchange two sa’a of dates for one sa’a, or two dirhams for one dirham, as this would be considered a form of usury. Usury is an act in which someone charges interest on money loaned out and this practice has been prohibited in Islam. The Prophet ﷺ taught his companions that they should not engage in such practices and instead should be honest and fair when dealing with others financially. This hadith teaches us the importance of being honest and fair when dealing with money matters, even if it means taking a loss or making less profit than expected.
