Excessive Grooming Forbidden

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) forbade excessive grooming and combing of the hair.

It was narrated from 'Abdullah bin Buraidah that: A man from among the Companions of the Prophet SAW who was called 'Ubaid said: "The Messenger of Allah SAW used to forbid too much of Al-Irfah". Ibn Buraidah was asked what too much of Al-Irfah meant, and he said: "It includes combing the hair".
أَخْبَرَنَا يَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ، قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ عُلَيَّةَ، عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ بُرَيْدَةَ، أَنَّ رَجُلاً، مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ يُقَالُ لَهُ عُبَيْدٌ قَالَ إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ كَانَ يَنْهَى عَنْ كَثِيرٍ مِنَ الإِرْفَاهِ ‏.‏ سُئِلَ ابْنُ بُرَيْدَةَ عَنِ الإِرْفَاهِ قَالَ مِنْهُ التَّرَجُّلُ

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ regarding grooming and hair care. It was narrated from Abdullah bin Buraidah that a man from among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ who was called 'Ubaid said that he used to forbid too much of Al-Irfah. Ibn Buraidah was asked what too much of Al-Irfah meant and he said it includes combing the hair. This hadith teaches us that we should not be excessive in our grooming habits as it is not pleasing to Allah SWT. We should take care of our appearance but not go overboard with it as this can lead to vanity and pride which are both disliked by Allah SWT. We should also remember that beauty lies in simplicity and moderation so we should strive for balance in all aspects of life including our grooming habits.
