Sunan an-Nasai 5238 (Book 48, Hadith 199) #19770
Following Practices of People of the Book

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) initially followed the practices of the People of the Book, but later changed his practice and parted his hair.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that: The Messenger of Allah SAW used to let his hair hang down (without a parting) and the Mushrikun used to part their hair. The Messenger of Allah SAW liked to act in accordance with the People of the Book, in matters where no specific command had been given to him. Then the Messenger of Allah SAW parted his hair after that.

QUICK LESSONS:
Follow Islamic teachings and values even if they are different from those practiced by people around you .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about how Prophet Muhammad ﷺ used to let his hair hang down without a parting, which was similar to how people from other religions such as Jews and Christians wore their hair. However, after some time he decided to part his hair like many others did at that time. This hadith teaches us that it is important for Muslims to be distinct from other religions in matters where there is no specific command given by Allah or His Messenger ﷺ. It also shows us that we should not blindly follow what others do if it goes against Islamic teachings or values.
