Sunan an-Nasai 5189 (Book 48, Hadith 150) #19721
The Value of Selling and Benefiting from Wealth

SUMMARY: The Prophet (SAW) advised a man to get rid of his gold ring, but later clarified that he should have sold it instead.

It was narrated from Al-Bara' bin 'Azib that : A man was sitting with the Prophet SAW and he was wearing a gold ring. The Messenger of Allah SAW had a stick in his hand and the Prophet SAW struck his finger. The man said: "What's wrong with me, O Messenger of Allah?" He said: "Why don't you get rid of this thing that is on your finger?" The man took it and threw it away. The Prophet SAW saw him after that and said: "What happened to the ring?" He said: "I threw it away". He said: "I did not tell you to do that, rather I told you to sell it and benefit from its price". This Hadith is Munkar.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith teaches us the importance of selling and benefiting from our wealth. It is narrated that a man was sitting with the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and he was wearing a gold ring. The Prophet ﷺ then struck his finger with a stick, asking him why he did not get rid of it. The man took off the ring and threw it away, but the Prophet ﷺ clarified that he should have sold it instead so as to benefit from its price. This hadith reminds us to be mindful when dealing with our wealth; we should always look for ways to benefit from what we own rather than simply throwing them away or giving them away for free. We can use our wealth in ways that will bring us closer to Allah SWT by spending on charity or helping those in need, while also being able to reap some benefits ourselves in return.
