Cursing of Riba and Wailing in Mourning

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) cursed those who consume Riba, pay it, write it down and withhold Sadaqah (Zakah). He also forbade wailing in mourning for the dead.

It was narrated from Husain, Mughirah, and Ibn 'Awn, from Ash-Sh'abi, from Al-Harith, from 'Ali, that: The Messenger of Allah SAW cursed the one who consumes Riba, the one who pays it, the one who writes it down, and the one who withholds Sadaqah (Zakah). And he used to forbid wailing (in mourning for the dead).

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's teachings on usury or riba and wailing in mourning for the dead. Usury or riba is a form of interest that is forbidden in Islam as it involves taking advantage of someone else's financial situation. The Prophet Muhammad cursed those who consume usury as well as those who pay it, write it down or withhold charity from others. He also forbade wailing when mourning for the dead because he believed that this was an act of disbelief which would not benefit the deceased person at all. Instead he encouraged people to be patient during times of grief and to remember Allah often during such times.

The values taught by this hadith are patience during times of grief; refraining from taking advantage of other people’s financial situations; remembering Allah often; being generous with charity; avoiding acts which are considered disbelief such as wailing when mourning for the dead; and following Islamic teachings on usury or riba.
