Sahih al-Bukhari 2041 (Book 33, Hadith 16) #1958
The Prophet's Practice of I'tikaf

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to practice I'tikaf every year in the month of Ramadan, and when his wives asked permission to do the same, he allowed them. However, when he saw four tents pitched in the mosque, he asked what was going on and said that it was not righteousness. He then removed the tents and did not perform I'tikaf that year in Ramadan but instead did it in Shawwal.

Narrated 'Amra bint 'Abdur-Rahman from 'Aisha: Allah's Messenger used to practice I'tikaf every year in the month of Ramadan. And after offering the morning prayer, he used to enter the place of his I'tikaf'.Aisha asked his permission to let her practice I'tikaf and he allowed her, and so she pitched a tent in the mosque. When Hafsa heard of that, she also pitched a tent (for herself), and when Zainab heard of that, she too pitched another tent. When, in the morning, Allah's Messenger had finished the morning prayer, he saw four tents and asked, "What is this?" He was informed about it. He then said, "What made them do this? Is it righteousness? Remove the tents, for I do not want to see them". So, the tents were removed. The Prophet did not perform I'tikaf that year in the month of Ramadan, but did it in the last ten days of Shawwal.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the practice of I’tikāf which is a spiritual retreat where one secludes themselves from worldly activities for a certain period of time. It is usually done during Ramadan or Shawwal as mentioned in this hadith. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ practiced this every year during Ramadan but when his wives asked permission to do so too, he allowed them. However, upon seeing four tents pitched in the mosque for their retreats, he questioned what they were doing and said that it was not righteousness before removing all four tents and deciding to perform his own retreat during Shawwal instead of Ramadan that year. This hadith teaches us about proper etiquette while performing religious practices such as I’tikāf as well as emphasizing on following Sunnah which are actions performed by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself such as performing I’tikāf annually during Ramadan or Shawwal depending on what suits him best at any given time.
