The Symbolism of Religion

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad saw a vision of people wearing shirts, some reaching the breast and some lower. Umar was wearing a shirt that he was dragging. When asked what this meant, the Prophet said it symbolized religion.

Abu Sa'eed Al-Khudri said: "The Messenger of Allah SAW said: 'While I was sleeping, I saw the people being shown to me, and they were wearing shirts. Some reached the breast and some reached lower than that. And 'Umar bin Al-Khattab was shown to me, and he was wearing a shirt that he was dragging;' They said: 'How do you interpret that, O Messenger of Allah?' He said: 'The religion'."

QUICK LESSONS:
Be proud of your faith; Show off your faith; Have strong religious convictions; Live an upright life according to Islamic teachings

EXPLANATIONS:
In this hadith, the Prophet Muhammad saw a vision in which people were wearing shirts that reached either their breast or lower than that. Umar bin Al-Khattab was also seen in the vision, but his shirt was so long it dragged on the ground behind him. When asked to interpret this dream, the Prophet said it symbolized religion - suggesting that religion is something we should wear proudly and not be ashamed of or try to hide away from others. This hadith teaches us to be proud of our faith and never be afraid to show it off - even if we are ridiculed for doing so! It also reminds us how important it is to have strong religious convictions and values in order to live an upright life according to Islamic teachings.
