Sahih al-Bukhari 2033 (Book 33, Hadith 8) #1950
The Practice of I'tikaf

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) practiced I'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan and was joined by Aisha, Hafsa, and Zainab bint Jahsh. He then abandoned the I'tikaf in that month and practiced it for ten days in Shawwal instead.

Narrated 'Amra: Aisha said, "the Prophet used to practice I'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan and I used to pitch a tent for him, and after offering the morning prayer, he used to enter the tent". Hafsa asked the permission of 'Aisha to pitch a tent for her and she allowed her and she pitched her tent. When Zainab bint Jahsh saw it, she pitched another tent. In the morning the Prophet noticed the tents. He said, 'What is this?" He was told of the whole situation. Then the Prophet said, "Do you think that they intended to do righteousness by doing this?" He therefore abandoned the I'tikaf in that month and practiced I'tikaf for ten days in the month of Shawwal".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the practice of I’tikaf, which is a spiritual retreat where one secludes themselves from worldly activities to focus on prayer and worshiping Allah. It is usually done during the last 10 days of Ramadan or during any other 10 day period throughout the year. In this hadith, we learn that Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) used to practice I’tikif during the last 10 days of Ramadan but when he saw Aisha, Hafsa, and Zainab bint Jahsh pitching tents for him he asked if they were doing it out of righteousness or not. When he found out they weren’t doing it out of righteousness he decided to abandon his plans for that month and practice it instead during Shawwal. This teaches us that even though we may have good intentions our actions should be done with pure intentions as well so as not to distract us from our spiritual goals or disrupt others around us who are also trying to focus on their worshiping Allah.
