Punishment for Theft During Prophet Muhammad's Time

SUMMARY: Theft was punished by cutting off the hand of the thief during the time of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) but only if it was for a shield which cost one Dinar.

It was narrated that Ayman said: "The hand of a thief was not be cut off during the time of the Messenger of Allah except for the price of a shield, which in those days was a Dinar". (Daif)

QUICK LESSONS:
Respect property rights and do not steal from others

EXPLANATIONS:
During the time of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, theft was punishable by cutting off the hand of the thief. However, this punishment would only be carried out if it was for a shield which cost one Dinar. A dinar is an ancient form of currency and in those days it could buy a shield. This hadith teaches us that stealing is wrong and should not be done as there are consequences to our actions. It also teaches us that justice should be served fairly and not too harshly as even though theft is wrong it does not warrant such an extreme punishment unless it is for something expensive like a shield which cost one dinar in those days.
