The Practice of I'tikaf During Ramadan

SUMMARY: The Prophet (ﷺ) used to practice I'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan and his wives continued this practice after him.

Narrated 'Aisha: (the wife of the Prophet) The Prophet used to practice I'tikaf in the last ten days of Ramadan till he died and then his wives used to practice I'tikaf after him.
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يُوسُفَ، حَدَّثَنَا اللَّيْثُ، عَنْ عُقَيْلٍ، عَنِ ابْنِ شِهَابٍ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ـ رضى الله عنها ـ زَوْجِ النَّبِيِّ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ كَانَ يَعْتَكِفُ الْعَشْرَ الأَوَاخِرَ مِنْ رَمَضَانَ حَتَّى تَوَفَّاهُ اللَّهُ، ثُمَّ اعْتَكَفَ أَزْوَاجُهُ مِنْ بَعْدِهِ‏.‏

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the practice of I'tikaf during the last ten days of Ramadan. It was narrated by 'Aisha, who was one of the wives of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. According to this hadith, it was a regular practice for Prophet Muhammad ﷺ to perform I'tikaf during these days and his wives continued this tradition after him. In Islamic terminology, I’tikāf means secluding oneself in a mosque for worship and remembrance of Allah SWT. It is an act that brings one closer to Allah SWT as it involves dedicating time solely for prayer and contemplation on His greatness. This hadith teaches us that we should strive to follow in the footsteps of our beloved prophet ﷺ by taking out time from our busy lives to dedicate ourselves solely towards worshipping Allah SWT during these blessed days.
