Punishment for Theft in Islam

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad ordered the cutting off of a woman's hand for stealing something.

It was narrated from Jabir that: a woman from Banu Makhzum stole (something), and she was brought to the Prophet. She sought the protection of Umm Salamah, but the Prophet said: "If Fatimah bint Muhammad were to steal, I would cut off her hand". And he ordered that her hand be cut off.

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the punishment for theft in Islam. According to this hadith, if someone is found guilty of stealing, their hand should be cut off as a punishment. This was demonstrated by the Prophet Muhammad when he ordered that a woman from Banu Makhzum have her hand cut off after she was found guilty of stealing something. Umm Salamah tried to protect her but the Prophet said that even if his daughter Fatimah were to steal, he would still order her hand to be cut off as well. This shows how serious and important it is in Islam not to steal and that there are consequences for doing so.
