Sunan an-Nasai 4878 (Book 46, Hadith 9) #19411
The Consequences of Stealing

SUMMARY: A man stole a Burdah and was brought before the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) who ordered that his hand be cut off. The man offered to give back the Burdah, but the Prophet said it was too late.

It was narrated from Safwan bin Umayyah, that: a man stole a Burdah of his, so he brought him before the Messenger of Allah, who ordered that his hand be cut off. He said: "O Messenger of Allah, I will let him have it". He said: "Abu Wahb! Why didn't you do that before you brought him to us?" And the Messenger of Allah had (the man's) hand cut off.

QUICK LESSONS:
Think carefully before doing something wrong or illegal; Respect other people's property; Follow laws and regulations; Be accountable for your own actions; Do not steal from others

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about a man who stole a Burdah, which is an outer garment worn by women in some parts of the world. He was brought before the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, who ordered that his hand be cut off as punishment for stealing. Even though the man offered to return what he had stolen, it was too late and so his hand was still cut off as punishment for his crime. This hadith teaches us that justice must be served and that stealing is wrong and will have consequences if caught. It also shows us how important it is to think carefully about our actions before we do something wrong or illegal because once we do something wrong there may not be any way to undo it or make up for it afterwards.
