Sunan an-Nasai 4320 (Book 42, Hadith 58) #18853
Eating Animals Forbidden by Allah

SUMMARY: The Prophet was on a journey and the people caught some small lizards. He did not forbid them from eating it, but he also did not tell them to eat it.

It was narrated that Thabit bin Yazid Al-Ansari said: "We were with the Prophet on a journey. We stopped to camp and the people caught some mastigures. I took a mastigure (a small lizard) and grilled it, and brought it to the Prophet. He took a palm stalk, and started counting his fingers with it, and said: 'A nation from among the children of Israel was turned into beasts of the Earth, and I do not know what kind of animals they were, I said: 'O Messenger of Allah, the people have eaten some of them'. He did not tell them to eat it, and he did not forbid them from eating it".

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about the permissibility of eating animals that are forbidden by Allah. The Prophet was on a journey with his companions when they stopped to camp and caught some small lizards. Thabit bin Yazid Al-Ansari took one of the lizards and grilled it, then brought it to the Prophet. The Prophet took a palm stalk and started counting his fingers with it, saying that a nation from among the children of Israel were turned into beasts of the Earth, but he did not know what kind of animals they were. When Thabit informed him that some people had eaten these animals, he neither forbade nor encouraged them to do so. This hadith teaches us that we should be careful in consuming any animal or food which is forbidden by Allah as we do not know if this animal has been cursed or transformed into something else due to its sins or wrongdoings in its previous life as humans have no knowledge about such matters except what has been revealed by Allah through His prophets and messengers.
