Sunan an-Nasai 4319 (Book 42, Hadith 57) #18852
Eating Mastigures According to the Prophet Muhammad

SUMMARY: The hadith is about the Prophet Muhammad's dislike of mastigures, and how if they were Haram, he would not have eaten them or told others to eat them.

It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that: he was asked about eating mastigures. He said: "Umm Hufaid gave some cooking fat, cottage cheese, and mastigures to the Messenger of Allah and the ate some of the cooking fat and cottage cheese, but he did not eat the mastigures because he found them distasteful. If they were Haram they would not have been eaten at the table-spread of the Messenger of Allah and the would not have told others to eat them".

QUICK LESSONS:
Be moderate when consuming food; Respect religious laws regarding consumption habits; Consume only what you find appealing/enjoyable within reason according to Islamic law .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about eating mastigures, which are a type of food. It was narrated from Ibn 'Abbas that he was asked about eating mastigures. He said that Umm Hufaid gave some cooking fat, cottage cheese, and mastigures to the Messenger of Allah and he ate some of the cooking fat and cottage cheese but did not eat the mastigures because he found them distasteful. This shows us that even though something may be permissible to eat according to Islamic law, it does not mean we should necessarily consume it if we find it distasteful or unappealing. Furthermore, this hadith teaches us that if something is Haram then it would not have been eaten at the table spread of Prophet Muhammad nor would he have told others to eat it. Therefore this hadith teaches us an important lesson in moderation when consuming food as well as being mindful of what we consume in terms of Islamic law.
