Refraining from Eating Unknown Food

SUMMARY: The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) refused to eat something he was unfamiliar with, and when it was clarified that it was not haram, Khalid bin Al-Walid ate it in front of the Prophet.

It was narrated from Ibn ' Abbas that: Khalid bin Al-Walid said that he entered upon Maimunah bint Al-Harith, who was his maternal aunt, with the Messenger of Allah, and some meat of a mastigure (a small lizard) was offered to the Messenger of Allah The Messenger of Allah would not eat anything until he knew what it was. One of the women said: "Why don't you tell the Messenger of Allah what he is eating?" So she told him that it was the meat of a mastigure, and he stopped eating. Khalid said: "I asked the Messenger of Allah 'Is it Haram?' He said: "No but it is a food that is not known in the land of my people, and I find it distasteful"". Khalid said: " I pulled it over toward myself and ate it, and the Messenger of Allah was watching me". And Ibn Al-Asamm narrated it from Maimunah, and he was in her apartment.

QUICK LESSONS:
Be cautious when consuming unknown foods; Make sure they are permissible before consuming them; Respect Islamic laws & teachings; Be mindful of your own tastes & preferences when deciding what you want to eat or not eat as long as they do not go against Islamic teachings or laws .

EXPLANATIONS:
This hadith is about refraining from eating food that one is unfamiliar with. The Prophet Muhammad PBUH refused to eat something he did not know until he found out what it was. When the woman clarified that the food being offered to him was a mastigure, which is a small lizard, he stopped eating because this type of food wasn't known in his land and he found it distasteful. However, Khalid bin Al-Walid pulled the meat over towards himself and ate it while the Prophet watched him without saying anything further about its consumption. This hadith teaches us an important lesson about being cautious when consuming unknown foods as we should always make sure they are permissible before consuming them. We should also be mindful of our own tastes and preferences when deciding what we want to eat or not eat as long as they do not go against Islamic teachings or laws.
